April 17th marks National Haiku Poetry Day, a celebration of one of the most enduring and elegant forms of poetry. At Haikuists, where creativity meets the rhythmic click of vintage typewriters, we’re excited to honor the art of haiku and the poets who bring it to life—one syllable at a time.
Haiku, with its precise structure and evocative style, holds a special place in our hearts. Whether written on the fly at a live event or carefully crafted behind the scenes, these brief poems demonstrate the power of simplicity in language.
What is a Haiku, Anyway?
A haiku is a short form poem with Japanese origins, traditionally written in three lines with a 5-7-5 syllable structure. It’s known for its simplicity, themes or nature, and the magical ability to capture a moment in just 17 syllables. Think of it as the original tweet—concise, clever, and (when done well) packed with meaning.
Our Poets’ Favorite Haiku
In honor of National Haiku Day, we’ve partnered with Wild Roof Journal, a community for visual and literary art. They are passionate about exploring the natural world with creativity, depth, nuance, and craft.
This collaboration showcases some of our talented typewriter poets’ original haiku. Whether silly, serious, or full of heartfelt imagery, these tiny poems pack a punch—and give a peek into the poetic range our artists bring to live events.
