Nostalgia for Summer: 14 Haiku that Capture the Season’s Simple Joys

Nov 01, 2024

There’s something timeless about summer—the long, unhurried days, the warmth that wraps around you like an old, familiar friend, and the small, quiet moments that bring a profound sense of peace. As the seasons turn and the days grow shorter, it’s easy to find ourselves yearning for those golden days of summer.

Through the art of haiku, we can relive the essence of summer—one vivid, sensory-packed moment at a time. These short poems capture those fleeting sensations, like the sound of the ice cream truck echoing down the street or the way a warm breeze tangles your hair.

Let’s dive into the poetry of summer and savor its memories in each carefully crafted syllable.

the day stretches on
like a cat, up from napping
nothing planned ahead
relief comes at night
as stars and mosquitos rise
heat wanes back 'til dawn
watermelon bliss
imagine life without time:
just the juicy now
gentle motions as
a warm breeze flares salty hair
the ultimate calm
incessant chiming
like a magnet for bored kids
to come buy cold treats
a starry silence
permeates the warm evening
comfort in still air
faded baseball cap
and a seaside cover-up
my summer couture
the sunset moves too
as lazy evenings await
dew prepares again
bare feet on wet earth
the indentation of grass
on cross-legged ankles
charcoal warms the grill
as my friends' laughter bellows
gathered, just because
the scent of chlorine
mixed with coconut sunscreen
instant time machine
moments preceding
spontaneous eruption
of echoed laughter
magic in the sand:
when a piece of tumbled glass
was buried treasure
try gardening each year
by July, plants turn all brown
next year's hope in seeds

These haiku are written by Michelle Nieweg and Jessica O'Brien
